Well, well, well…Harper Government ‘Repairs’ Arts Cuts Damage

Check out this article on how Prime Minister Stephen Harper is trying to repair the damage caused by his cultural slash-and-burn:

“The new funding will reportedly include $100 million for arts festivals, music, and comedy across the country and $60 million for the Cultural Spaces Canada program, which constructs and maintains theaters, museums, and other cultural buildings….”

Since the veracity of the budget is under some scrutiny at the moment by the Parliamentary Budget Officer …. that’s $160 million minus the funds that were cut from the budget last year right? At a rough estimate (or the estimate of the Canadian Conference of the Arts) you’re already down to $100 million. Take off the Luminato prize – since it’s terms have yet to be specified (ahem). Down to $75 million. And what about cultural programs that will come up for renewal in the next fiscal year ….?

Bill, agreed. Photo. Ick.
