What’s Hot Now: 3 Canadian Exhibitions Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver

1. META: RYERSON NEW MEDIA GRAD SHOW TORONTO
April 16 – 18, 2009

META exhibits the work of 4th Year New Media students from Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts. Of course, there are tons of grad shows this time of year, but this one strikes us as very well produced.

Look out for pieces like Hammerhead, an interactive sculpture that allows the viewer see through the eyes of an animal, and the excellent Of Plastic Circumstance by Rose Broadbent, which pairs sand with Styrofoam to offer a poignant comment on our environmental situation.

Meanwhile, six artists from British Columbia are showing in Ottawa. Blue like an Orange is inspired by a well-known line of poetry by surrealist poet Paul Éluard (The world is blue like an orange), and combines humorous and poetic transformations of the everyday world.

Artists are Samuel Roy-Bois, Sonny Assu, Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky, the unbelievably creative ceramic artist Brendan Tang and Lucy Pullen.

3. CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY VANCOUVER: MARSHMALLOW+CAULRON+FIRE=BGL, TIM GARDINER
April 17 – June 7, 2009

Quebec-based art collective BGL combine humour and social critique to address global and local political issues. They have shown a fair amount in Montreal and Toronto, but this is – we believe – their first major exhibition in Vancouver.

Canadian artist Tim Gardner is well-known for his precise watercolor paintings and oil pastel drawings that often incorporate Canadian landscape imagery. He’s well known internationally and has had solo exhibitions at The National Gallery, London (2007) and SF MOMA, San Francisco (2006). This exhibition will be his first solo exhibition in a public Canadian gallery.
