Doug Wright’s most famous character, Nipper. Image: calgaryherald.com
The graphic artist Seth has designed and co-edited a gorgeous coffee table book on the erstwhile celebrity cartoonist, whose Nipper comic strip became a huge hit across the country in the 1960s.
This book is a wonderful object and a highly entertaining read, even if you’re not into graphic novels, or comics.

Perhaps this explains why my parents always referred to me as Nipper as a child! I don’t think I was that much of a hell-raiser, though! Ha, ha! Anyway, I always feel heartened when a bit of Canadian cultural history (that isn’t, like, hockey-related) is rediscovered and celebrated. There is so much more in Canadian pop culture to uncover!
Seth is a fellow Guelph-ite (although I’m now in Ireland) and his work is beautiful. His love of comics, vintage Canadiana and ephemera is always forefront. From his own work to the Charlie Brown books he did, you can always see his passion and sincerity. I will have to track this book down.
You can buy it here - (should have included this in the original post!)
