Reel Artists Film Fest: El Anatsui, Ernst Beyeler & Sam Keller, Alex Colville

In the midst of promoting the Canadian Art Reel Artists Film Festival, which opens this Wednesday night, Feb 24th with a big gala screening and then to the public from Friday Feb 26th to Sunday 28th in Toronto, there are three under-the-radar highlights that you should know about:

1. Fold, Crumple, Crush: The Art of El Anatsui is the world premiere of a film on the amazing African artist whose wondrous metal wallhangings took the Venice biennale by storm several years ago. He will also have the world premiere of a retrospective of his work at the ROM in Toronto coming up later this year.

2. Ernst Beyeler: Art Dealer is a fascinating film about the Swiss art dealer who bought works directly from Picasso and Warhol, among others. What makes the screening on Sunday so interesting, though is the fact that Beyeler Foundation director (and former head of Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach) Sam Keller will be there, and will do a Q and A with the Canadian Art Foundation’s Ann Webb afterwards.

Inside the Beyeler Foundation, with Giacommetti’s L’Homme Qui Marche I, which recently became the most expensive work to ever sell at auction, for $104.3 million.

3. How much do you know about Alex Colville? Other than being one of Canada’s greatest living painters, and being from the East coast, probably not much. Well, now’s the time to learn. And the painter has got a show opening March 6th at Toronto’s Mira Godard Gallery too, so you can see the works in person.
