4. HAROLD KLUNDER – NEW WORKS – AT TREPANIER BAER

New paintings by one of Canada’s most highly acclaimed painters, Harold Klunder go on view at Trapanier Baer Gallery from October 16 – 13 November.

You’ve gotta love his self-portraits, no? I think they are really, really excellent. One of my favorites – not from this show – is this little series, below:

5. NEW ARTIST/NEW GALLERY: MATTHEW MARK

We’ve been told that a recent grad from ACAD, Matthew Mark, is an artist to watch. He’s got a show coming up at Straw Gallery from – I think – today only until October 11.

His art practice includes paintings, sculpture and furniture that he makes with Jeremy Terrance, as MMJT Contemporary Furniture. More images on their blog, HERE.

Mark is the director of the brand new Haight Gallery, opening on November 19. From the looks of their website, they will show a group of eclectic young artists, including Kat Garland and Viviane Mehr.

6. THE BRAND NEW SAAG!

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery reopened last month after renovations and a new addition, with, we hear, a ‘blow out’ of an opening party. Here’s one of the works from that exhibition, curated by Ryan Doherty:

Up next at SAAG from November 20, 2010 – 9 January, 2011 is Boole: Christian Giroux and Daniel Young. A pair of noteworthy sculptors, the two were nominated for the 2009 Sobey Art Prize.

I wrote about their work Reticulated Gambol HERE. This new show continues their interest in making contemporary modernist sculpture using Ikea furniture.
