Works of Art for Christmas!

Art makes a great gift. People don’t always realize how inexpensive some books and multiples are, and isn’t it better to support local art scenes than buy from major corporations? I think so.

Here are my top picks for Canada’s best art shopping:

1. ART METROPOLE. Started by General Idea in 1974, Art Met continues to specialize in the sale of artist multiple, artist books, video and more. Much of it is very affordable and rather unusual. Gold-plated replica of Peaches’ teeth on a chain, anyone?

Check out the comprehensive website, HERE. It’s fun to browse.

2. CANADIAN MAGAZINES.

Support Magenta, a newish online publication, or buy a subscription to the excellent Vancouver journal Fillip, or to Toronto’s artist-run magazine Hunter & Cook.

3. NSCAD PRESS. The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design is Canadian institution, placed firmly on the international contemporary art map back in 1967, when Garry Niall Kennedy was made president, and began inviting artists such as Claes Oldenburg, Sol Lewitt, Joseph Beuys, Vito Acconci and others to visit.

The press remains active, producing fascinating books such as As Long as it’s Pink: The Sexual Politics of Taste; Rethinking the Contemporary Art School: The Artist, the PhD and the Academy, not to mention artist books like Micah Lexier’s recent work, I’m Thinking of a Number, which is excellent. Place an order HERE.

Of course, if you strongly believe in what NCAD Press is doing for the Canadian art and publishing worlds, there’s always the option of supporting the press directly, or sponsoring a book. You can do that HERE.

4. THE VAG. Not only is the Vancouver Art Gallery’s shop excellent (chosen as one of Vancouver’s best gift shops by the Georgia Straight), they also offer some pretty brilliant artist editions, including works by internationally acclaimed artists Fiona Tan, O Zhang and the First Nations artist Marianne Nicolson.

5. ART PRINTS. Oh, and there’s the artist print collaboration between Winnipeg’s Martha Street Studio (Manitoba’s Printmakers Association) and The Other Gallery, run by Toronto-based Winnipeg artist Paul Butler.

You can buy artworks direct from The Other Gallery HERE, and prints by the Royal Art Lodge and its members, as well as other artists local to Winnipeg’s fantastic little art scene.

6. THE CANADIAN CENTRE FOR ARCHITECTURE. Books, books, books. Phyllis Lambert’s organization is without doubt one of Canada’s greatest treasures, and the bookstore carries many excellent titles on art, design and architecture that you’ll have a hard time finding elsewhere, including books on city planning, architectural and garden history and photography.

A recent title is by the excellent French artist, Sophie Calle: True Stories: Hasselblad Award 2010. They also carry some wonderful multiples, like CRUM’s Petit Envelope Urbaine, among others. They have excellent cards and architect-y books for kids, too.
